- Time
Our portrait sessions are scheduled a minimum of 1 hr., depending on the type of session, and number of people involved. We do not work by a clock, but rather shoot until we get an excellent variety of photographs for you to choose from.
- What to wear
One of the most important things to consider when preparing for a photo shoot is your choice of clothing. Planning your attire in advance can give your photographs a much more professional look. Not planning your attire can make your photographs look more like a snapshot taken by a tourist. We always make it a point to discuss clothing with you before the shoot, but here are some helpful general guidelines.
- Solo sessions
If you are doing a solo shoot with us (modeling, senior portraits, etc.) bring several outfits, some clothes will look better against the scenery than others. Bring several options, and we'll help you figure out which ones will work best. We don't penalize you for clothing changes like some Photographers do. The more looks you have to choose from, the happier you'll be with your selection.
- When it comes to the actual clothing that you select, go for variety. Choose casual or Sunday best, solid colors and patterns. Again, variety is the key.
- Do be advised, that clothing options that show a lot of skin, like sleeveless dresses and tops, draw attention from your face and put it right on those areas. The same thing applies to bright color clothing.
- High school seniors as well as any individual portrait session, please feel free to discuss with us about making your portrait tell about who you are, if your into sports, music, or any other area of special interest where you stand out and excel, that is a good thing to bring that out and express that interest in some of your portraits for you to pick from. Because of our large outdoor studio, some seniors have also wanted portraits made with their car, jeep, motorcycle and the like, and that is no problem at all.
- Group sessions
If you are doing a group session with us, it's very important that everyone in your group coordinates. Everyone in the group should have the same colored pants - preferably either denim, khaki or black. However, if everyone has different shades of blue, denim may not work for you.
- Everyone should also have solid colored shirts. It's not quite as important that everyone wears the same style of shirt, but it's very important that everyone wears the same colored tops. Stripes, plaids and patterns are highly discouraged. Solid colors look much cleaner and more professional. Again, if you all have green tops, but they are different shades of green, that doesn't work. We often recommend either solid black or solid white shirts. But maroons, dark blues or greens can look good as well.
- Our studio is an outdoor portrait park, with lush green foliage, and props, mostly antique style, and some white arbor and gazebo scenes. normally there is a lot of green so keep that in mind. Fall colors in the later part of the year.
- If you have a large group with multiple families, think about what group shots you want us to shoot. In other words, the whole group, Family A, Family B, Family C, just the children, just the Grandparents, etc. A list of the shots that you want.
- Children or pets
If your shoot involves children, try to have them rested if possible. If the shoot involves children or pets, you should consider bringing something that will get their attention so that we can get their attention for some of the portraits. A favorite toy or noisemaker works great for this.
We hope that this information will help you prepare for your portrait session, and make your photographs that much more beautiful.
